I have been dreaming and planning a trip to Dolomites trips for years! But, one shouldn’t drive to the Dolomites and skip the iconic Intersport Klettersteig Donnerkogel Via Ferrata, aka the Sky Ladder. But, let’s start at the beginning. 2025 was the year when all the stars aligned. And together with my best friends R and O we finally managed to get from planning to traveling. And to be perfectly honest this first via ferrata was the perfect one to start our trip.

No car road-trip is complete without making a few iconic stops and our first one was near Hallstatt. No need to hype out what a step into a movie scenery to get there! It is a fairy tale with waterfalls, swans and such a unique and tranquil vibe! I will not dwell on our 0 “bisility” adventure to the famous 5 Fingers view point. Or how we lost the drone in Hallstatt lake…. It seemed like the trip started on the worse that can happen.

But, on the last day of August, we finally started our journey on one of Austria’s most iconic via ferratas. It is known as the Intersport Klettersteig Donnerkogel – Himmelsleiter.
The via ferrata is best known for its spectacular suspended ladder and dramatic alpine scenery. What I found was not just adrenaline, but one of the most visually rewarding climbing experiences in the Dachstein region.
If you’re searching for a via ferrata that combines exposure and solid protection, this one truly delivers. It offers breathtaking views and a strong sense of achievement.
Where is Intersport Klettersteig Donnerkogel Via Ferrata?
The via ferrata is located near the village of Gosau, in the heart of the Dachstein Alps. The Donnerkogel massif rises above the Gosau valley, offering panoramic views over alpine pastures and the Dachstein glacier region.

Access is straightforward, by the Gosausee lake, making this via ferrata approachable. FYI, the approach can be done both on foot or by cable car. I guess took us an hour and a half to reach the starting point. If you want to keep your strength for the descent, consider taking the mountain cable car. The descent is harder in my book than the ascent, as it is really long and stoney. It starts from Gosaukammbahn, and from there approximately half an hour. I recommend the latter.
Quick Facts – about the Intersport Klettersteig Donnerkogel via ferrata
- Difficulty: C/D (with optional D sections)
- Height: approx. 2,055 m
- Vertical gain: ~500 m
- Time needed: 5–5.5 hours (round trip)
- Best season: June to October
- Highlight: the legendary Himmelsleiter (Sky Ladder)
What Makes the Sky-ladder via ferrata So Special?
This via ferrata is most famous for its 40-meter vertical ladder, suspended high above the valley. Climbing it feels surreal—your feet are firmly on metal rungs, yet the world drops away beneath you.
What surprised me most was:
- The stability of the ladder
- The psychological challenge, more than physical difficulty
- The absolute silence when you pause halfway and look around and figure you still have the other half
This is one of those moments, where fear and awe exist at the same time—and that’s exactly why people come here!
My Experience on the Intersport Klettersteig Donnerkogel Via ferrata
Late August turned out to be a perfect choice, weather conditions wise. It was stable, sunny, unlike the previous day in Hallstatt. We parked the car below Gosausee (it is a paying parking lot – approx 10 euro if I recall correctly and headed on foot to the via ferrata.
Knowing what I know now, there are a few things I would do differently in order to make this experience even better.

– First of all, I would chose a week day not the weekend. We went on a Sunday and there were probably more than 50 people on the route that day! Yes, It is that popular! Instagram magnet and bucket-list worthy so plan accordingly!
– Do not underestimate it. Plan ahead for a long day with water, food, and a lot of patience for traffic jams! There were a lot of beginners and it is now by any definition an easy route. We, and a lot of other climbers, had to bypass plenty of unprepared tourist. Honestly it looks spectacular, it is spectacular but it’s long… You need stamina, experience and please don’t think that someone else managed, so will you!
– People will react different on the steps, feeling the pressure of the heights! So leave them space and try to enjoy! Even for us, the reactions were very mixed! We had one “My mother told me not to come and never again!” to I love it! But when the summit was reached, I swear that we were already planning a come back, together, next year!
– The descent is heavier than the climb and the approach. Therefor it might be a good idea to plan ahead and catch the last cable car ! We didn`t!
But the route flows beautifully:
- Easy mixing with harder sections, even D
- A mix of vertical, traversing, and exposed sections
- The ladder is a trill but, in my book, the last part was the most beautiful one! Exposed ridge, incredible views and such a rush!

Reaching the summit brought that deep satisfaction only alpine routes can give! And that feeling stayed with us long after the descent.

This route is ideal if you:
- Have previous via ferrata experience (at least C level)
- Are comfortable with heights and exposure
- Want a memorable alpine challenge, not just a checklist climb
